Patients often ask about fluoroscopy, which is one of the oldest types of diagnostic imaging. It’s a medical imaging technique that uses X-rays to create “real-time” moving images of body structures, much like an X-ray movie.
During this type of study, an X-ray beam is passed through the body. The image is then transferred to a monitor so the movement of a specific body part can be seen in detail by our radiologists. We then can administer a dye or other contrast agent so the radiologist can examine how it flows within and through the body.
This medical imaging test is used in procedures like barium studies, where fluoroscopy allows us to see the movement of the intestines as the barium moves through them. Other types of contrast studies may be used with arthrograms, or joint arthroscopy.
