A Diagnostic X-ray is a quick, painless and noninvasive exam that produces images of the anatomy inside the body. X-rays are the oldest and most frequently used form of medical imaging.
X-rays use a small amount of ionizing radiation to generate pictures of the inside of the body. Different parts of the body absorb the X-rays in varying degrees. Bone absorbs much of the radiation, while soft tissue allows more of the X-rays to pass through it. As a result, bones appear white, soft tissue shows up in shades of gray and air appears black.
Doctors order X-rays for many reasons, including:
- Lung disease
- Fractured bones or joint dislocations
- Scoliosis, disc disease or other spinal defects
- Locating foreign bodies
- Abdominal pathology, including kidney stones and obstruction
- Upper GI series
- Chest X-rays
