Low bone density test
Bone Densitometry is today’s established standard for measuring BMD, or Bone Mineral Density. This quick, painless and noninvasive exam is useful in determining your BMD and assessing your risk for conditions like osteoporosis.
A Bone Densitometry scan uses radiographic (X-ray) techniques to measure bone loss in the hip and spine. The scan also measures an individual’s risk for developing fractures in the future. Bone Densitometry scans are common procedures at our office, with an increasing number of doctors recommending them for preventive purposes.
Vertebral Fracture Assessment (or VFA) is a low-density bone scan that reveals existing fractures. Vertebral fractures are very common in older adult populations. Because many individuals with vertebral fractures are asymptomatic, the addition of VFA to testing for low bone density can provide a more accurate assessment of your risk of fracture.
